Hockenheim Gossip: Horta Parks the Lister to Snatch Suspicious Victory

October 02, 2026 09:01am

Fernando Horta wins at Hockenheim in a tight Lister Storm parade, despite being nearly a second slower than his rivals on raw pace.

Jamie Campbell-Walter (Lister Racing): 'He was slower on every single lap except the ones where he parked his absolute monstrosity of a car right on the apex, and frankly, I suspect his Lister Storm was fueled entirely by smuggled Brazilian cachaça.'

The paddock gossip is reaching a boiling point after the five-lap sprint at the Hockenheimring. In what can only be described as a masterclass in defensive parking, Fernando Horta (#01 Lotus F1 Team) snatched a highly suspicious victory in his Lister Storm, despite possessing the slowest personal best lap among the top four finishers.

The numbers do not lie, even if the drivers do. While Campbell-Walter (#14 Lister Racing) was flying around the German circuit with a blazing 1:38.217, Horta could only muster a 1:39.158—nearly a full second slower on raw pace. Yet, after 22,820 metres of high-octane tension, Horta crossed the line a mere 0.360 seconds ahead of the British driver. It was a race won not in the corners, but in the mirrors.

Paddock whispers suggest that the Lister Racing boys were clearly harmed by these defensive tactics. Andrea Piccini, finishing third in the #15 Lister (+0.829s), spent most of the afternoon flashing his high beams and shouting Italian gibberish, while Jean Louis Schlesser brought his #00 machine home in fourth (+1.575s), close enough to smell Horta's burning brake pads. The top four were separated by less than two seconds, forming a very expensive, very loud Lister Storm parade.

Further back, Mika Salo had a miserable afternoon in fifth, finishing over 15 seconds behind the leading group. Rumour has it Salo's crew spent the race arguing about whether to change tyres or simply open a cold beer to forget the deficit.

Lotus F1 Team Principal Hugh Laurie was cornered by the press near the paddock bins, looking characteristically unimpressed by his driver's triumph.

Hugh Laurie (Lotus F1 Team Principal): We won, yes. But do not look at me like that. Horta told the telemetry engineers that he was 'managing the gaps' and 'saving the mechanicals.' People lie. He was terrified, his palms were sweaty, and he got lucky that Hockenheim does not allow overtaking by law of physics if you just make your car wide enough.

Ps. Mansell, we know you are hiding in the motorhome. Come out, the race is over!
