Massimo Triumphs at Hockenheim as Horta's German Tragedy Ends on Lap 3

October 04, 2026 01:00pm

Massimo dominates at Hockenheimring in his Ferrari 575 GTC while Fernando Horta suffers another heartbreaking lap-three collapse.

3. That is the precise, soul-crushing number of laps Fernando Horta managed to complete before his Saleen S7-R suffered a fatal mechanical heartbreak at the Hockenheimring.

While the Brazilian driver wept softly behind the tire stacks, Massimo delivered a clinical masterclass at the front of the field. Piloting the #60 AGIP Ferrari 575 GTC, Massimo controlled all 23 laps, taking the checkered flag in 33:12.768. Martin Truex Jr. finished a distant second (+21.400s) despite setting the overall fastest lap of the session (1:24.373) in his Lamborghini Murcielago R-GT. In GT2, Chris claimed class victory in the #65 Nissan 350Z, while Scuderia Libra's Juliano Flores limped home in ninth after a grueling 22-lap battle.

Horta's brief campaign was captured on the official team radio transcript just before the darkness consumed his engine bay:

Horta (#01): Is that white smoke behind us, or the mist of pure despair?
USSR Engineer: Water pressure is zero, Fernando. Park the car.
Horta (#01): My heart is shattered into twenty-three pieces! Tell the paddock I tried!
USSR Engineer: Understood. Leave the key under the mat and buy a pretzel.

The early retirement leaves the team in absolute anguish following previous mechanical disasters in Brno and Magny-Cours.

Hugh Laurie (USSR Lotus F1 Team Principal): We expected 23 laps, total dominance, and a podium. Anything less is an existential failure. People lie when they say taking part is what matters—this was pure agony.

Ps. Jens, we saw your P7 finish in the JP Racing Porsche, but where were you when our world collapsed?
