Race report: Anderstorp Race Notes: BMW Motorsport Survives Its Own Success
Roger Wilco sat in the gravel pit at Turn 4, staring at a Swedish seagull, while the chequered flag remained safely rolled up in a cupboard. He had won the race. Or, rather, he had ceased to function slightly later than anyone else on the circuit, which under local municipal ordinances counted as a victory.
To understand how the #42 BMW M3 GTR achieved this triumph of survival, we must rewind to the beginning of this four-lap exercise in mechanical nihilism. There was no starting grid. The timing screens refused to acknowledge where anyone stood, perhaps out of respect for their privacy. When the green light appeared, Werner Marote in the #43 sister car was immediately disqualified. He had completed zero laps. He had not even managed to engage first gear before the stewards decided his presence was an affront to Swedish motorsport. He was dismissed from the premises before his exhaust had even warmed up.
This left Wilco and a second, mysteriously identical #42 BMW piloted by a driver rumoured to be Fernando Horta. Because our team budget apparently cannot cover unique vinyl decals, both cars carried the same number, leading to severe tracking issues for the local spotters. Not that it mattered. The gap between the two identical machines was less of a racing interval and more of a theological debate.
Horta was fast. Allegedly. The timing sheets credit him with a 1:32.889 on his second tour, a lap time that should have placed him comfortably in another postal code compared to Wilco' leisurely 1:36.765. But speed at Anderstorp is a temporary condition. While Horta was busy attempting to break the sound barrier on a former military runway, Wilco was conserving his machinery by driving with the caution of a man transporting a boot full of antique porcelain.
Alan Donatellofson (Crew Chief): Roger, the car behind you is currently operating at a pace that suggests he has left his stove on at home. I suggest letting him pass so we do not have to sweep up his carbon fibre later.
Wilco complied, pulling to the side and allowing the yellow-and-white blur to sweep past. It was a tactical masterpiece. On lap three, the inevitable occurred. Horta's engine, which had been screaming like a trapped animal for nine minutes, finally surrendered. The retirement was quiet, efficient, and thoroughly unclassified. Horta pulled off, leaving Wilco completely alone on the asphalt, representing the entirety of the active field.
Alan Donatellofson (Crew Chief): Congratulations, Roger. You are now the only driver left on the Scandinavian peninsula. Please try not to hit the scenery while completing your final lap.
Wilco did his best, but the car had other ideas. On lap four, just as the finish line came into view, the BMW's steering column decided it had contributed enough to the weekend. The car veered gently into the gravel, registering a DNF but securing P1 by virtue of having travelled approximately four kilometres further than any other living soul.
The team is currently celebrating this historic victory by drinking lukewarm tap water in the garage while the mechanics try to figure out why we brought three cars to Sweden just to leave them all in various states of ruin.
Ps. A brief correction: earlier drafts of this report indicated that Werner Marote was disqualified for an illegal engine map. In reality, he was disqualified because he spent the warm-up lap trying to tune the car radio to a local pop station and drove straight into a parked marshal's scooter.
