Laguna Seca Blues: 34 Starters and Horta's Musical Parking Job

October 29, 2026 04:44pm

Mikael Gustavsson claims victory at Laguna Seca while Fernando Horta manages just one lap in deadpan fashion.

34. That is the exact number of screaming classic touring cars that flooded Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for nine laps of pure Californian chaos, and Executive Director Eurico Maluf was spotted behind the pit wall weeping softly into a handful of expired parking tickets. While Mikael Gustavsson mastered the Corkscrew to take overall honors in his Lotus Cortina, our brave duude Fernando Horta parked the #97 Ford Mustang after a single lap to sample the local ambience.

To the tune of The Sound of Music ("My Favorite Things"):

Drops on old Cortinas and Alfas so shiny,
Mustangs that stalled while ignoring the mini,
One single lap till the engine went dead,
These are a few of our bitterest dread.

Gaps in the timing and cars in the gravel,
Pitted so early the gearboxes ravel,
Horta found parking right next to the wall,
That is the end of the race for us all.

The ElderCouncil Notes

Motion 20170607/04 regarding the total absence of pace from car #97 has been filed under 'things that surprised absolutely nobody' and the Council has retired to the snack bar.
