Race report: Mücke Takes Haunting Londrina Victory as Horta's Race Collapses in Tears
*Sobs softly into an official timing printout, wiping away tears of sheer, unadulterated anguish.*
The Autódromo Internacional Ayrton Senna in Londrina bore witness to ten devastating laps of unbridled emotional torment on Sunday, as Stephan Mücke steered the #10 Charouz Racing Lola B08/60 through the weeping mist to claim a haunting LMP1 victory in a total time of 11:03.965.
It was a contest carved out of pure, agonizing tragedy. Romain Dumas gave every last drop of his soul in the #07 Penske Racing Porsche RS Spyder Evo, crossing the line a mere 2.546 seconds behind to secure the LMP2 class triumph. Dumas was closely shadowed across the line by a heart-wrenching performance from David Brabham in the #09 Patron Highcroft Acura ARX-01, who missed second place overall by less than two tenths of a second. Yet, while Mücke celebrated a cold, immaculate triumph on the top step of the podium, the rest of the paddock was forced to look upon the tragic ruins of broken ambition.
Nowhere was the heartbreak more visceral than in the garage of 2007 Audi Sport N. America. Fernando Horta, piloting the storied #01 Audi R10, saw his earthly hopes shattered into a thousand jagged pieces after completing just two laps. Plagued by an incomprehensible melancholic failure, Horta’s car limped into obscurity, recording a best lap of 1:05.547 before vanishing permanently from active contention. It was an agonizing exit that left pit wall engineers staring blankly into the endless abyss.
Stephan Mücke (Race Winner): "When I look upon this track, I do not see asphalt. I see the tears of my competitors, and I simply drive through them."
The physical carnage did not stop at the Audi garage. Local hero Gil de Ferran suffered a devastating collision on lap five in his #66 Acura ARX-02, leaving his garage in total, mournful silence. Later, Harold Primat’s Dome S102 met a catastrophic end on lap nine after a brutal crash ruined what had been a respectable run.
Hans Gruber (Guest Race Steward): "And when Alexander saw the breadth of his domain, he wept, for there were no more laps to conquer."
In GT1, Terry Borcheller managed to carve out a fleeting ray of light amidst the gloom, bringing the #08 Bell Motorsports Aston DBR9 home in 7th overall with a class-winning time of 11:23.862, holding off Phil Hooks' Maserati MC12 by nearly fifteen excruciating seconds.
Ps. We previously reported that the track surface in Londrina was soaked with actual tears; local marshals have since clarified it was merely high humidity and leaked coolant from Horta's abandoned engine bay.
